I am writing an article on Jews who fled the Nazis and found refuge in Africa. Whereas in Europe their Jewishness marked them as a different race that should be exterminated, once they arrived in Africa, they regained their whiteness and held positions of power over Black Africans. I’m interested in the connection between race and religion, different perceptions of whiteness in Europe and outside of Europe, and the dialectic of victims and oppressors in extreme situations.
