Jarvis Thurston and Mona van Duyn Professor in the Humanities

I am a researcher in Mexican and Latin American Studies with a focus on literature, cinema and food. My research touches on questions about Mexico’s history of mestizaje and the question of pigmentocracy as a social category. More recently, I have become concerned through food studies on how ideas of indigeneity and mestizaje touch upon notions such as identity, authenticity and various forms of neoliberal policy, as well as the fraught relationship between Mexico and Mexican American communities in the United States.
