Deniz Aksoy

Associate Professor of Political Science

Professor Aksoy’s recent research focuses on the influence of domestic political institutions on patterns of political violence. They investigate why marginal political groups target civilians through the use of terrorism (i.e., politically motivated violence against non-combatants) in pursuit of their political goals. Given that many armed groups that use political violence across the world are motivated by ethnic or religious grievances, understanding the influence of political institutions on political violence is very important to understand ethnic politics globally.
