Elena Farel is interested in African American opera performance. Her dissertation, “African American Opera Performers in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries,” focuses on how Black singers made stages and performance opportunities for themselves while negotiating race, gender, and the operatic canon. Elena has presented at the American Musicological Society and the Society for American Music, and is a Fall 2020 Graduate Student Fellow at Washington University’s Center for the Humanities.
