Professor of Medicine, School of Medicine, Department of Medicine and Office of Education, Medical Education Research Unit
I do research in health professions education and develop the skills of faculty in the School of Medicine for research and scholarship in education. In 2022 I was first author/co-principal investigator on a study funded by the national Group on Educational Affairs of the AAMC, presented at the AAMC meeting and published as a RIME (Research in Medical Education) paper in Academic Medicine, “Racial/ethnic disparities in clerkship grading: Perspectives of students and teachers.” We did a secondary analysis of this dataset to explore racial/ethnic disparities in feedback in medical students’ clinical learning spaces. This study, “Perspectives on Equity in Clinical Feedback: A Qualitative Study Using a Critical Race Theory Lens,” was presented at a meeting of the Macy Foundation in Dec. 2022 and published as an epub in April 2023, and will be published in August 2023 in Academic Medicine. I am currently collaborating with School of Medicine faculty to develop a faculty development series based on this work, with the goal of shifting clinical learning environments in medical school toward more equitable feedback.
