Jean Allman

JH Hexter Professor in the Humanities, Director of the Center for the Humanities

As a scholar of Africa’s past, Professor Allman has focused on both race and ethnicity in the British colonial context, especially as related to politics, indirect rule, missionaries/medicine, and belief systems. Her work on the postcolonial African past has been concerned with Pan-Africanism, nationalism, and resistance. Her most recent scholarship explores the racial landscape of knowledge production about Africa, both in the US and on the continent.
