My research focuses on the intersection of race and performance, predominantly in the United States and to a lesser extent the broader African Diaspora. I build upon the work of scholars who theorize race as performance but also analyze the material histories of performance practices, especially dance, musical theater, and variety, through which ideas about race and nation are constituted and deployed.
