Paul Steinbeck’s current research focuses on the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a collective organization of African American composers/performers (founded in 1965) whose artistic output and discursive contributions helped transform the field of experimental music from a scene dominated by white composers into a more inclusive space that has increasingly welcomed black artists as well as composers whose artistic practice incorporates improvisation.
