Dr. Ross is a cultural and linguistic anthropologist who studies humanitarianism, conflict, media, and technology, mostly in central Africa. His research centers on local humanitarians’ use of communications technology to intervene in a low-level conflict in northern Democratic Republic of the Congo. This includes researching anti-Blackness in humanitarianism globally and the ways in which ethnic divisions emerge amid political violence, insecurity, and demographic change in east and central Africa. His teaching also engages race and ethnicity as they emerge in humanitarianism, urban planning, language, conflict, and cross-cultural encounters.
