My research engages questions the development of articulations of race, class, and gender through social movement pamphlet literature. Working specifically with the US Community Party in the 1930s and 1940s, I look at how the Black Nation Thesis, a call to recognize a nation of Black people in the Black Belt of the Southern US, was used as a speculative fiction to imagine new ways of talking about and organizing around the connections of race, class, and gender.
